Chapter 14 - I'LL PAY
Margaret was not dragged away screaming.
That would have been too easy.
Instead, she went cold.
She invoked her attorney.
Refused to answer questions.
Walked out flanked by officers with the posture of someone still convinced this would all somehow be temporary.
But outside the clubhouse, as patrol lights flashed red and blue across the neat suburban hedges, Margaret turned once more toward Emily.
“I said I’d pay,” she spat.
Emily stood beneath the parking-lot lamp, face calm.
“That was your problem,” she answered. “You thought money was the same thing as consequence.”
Margaret’s jaw tightened.
Within a week, the fallout widened.
The HOA suspended Margaret pending board investigation, then forced her resignation when Crestline ties became public.
Crestline denied wrongdoing at first, then backed away from the neighborhood agreement when subpoena threats appeared.
Arthur filed for separation.
More former residents came forward.
Megan reopened her case with police.
June Holloway organized homeowners furious enough to demand a full audit of every nuisance action Margaret had influenced.
And Buddy?
Buddy came home with a brace, medication, and strict orders for rest.
He slept on Emily’s bed the first night back, curled against her ribs, still shivering in his dreams whenever a car door slammed outside.
Emily cried then.
Not the raw helpless crying from the roadside.
Something quieter.
Something emptied out.
She stroked his ears until he settled.
The next morning, a “For Sale” sign appeared on Margaret’s front lawn.
But before Emily could feel satisfaction, her phone rang.
Officer Reed.
“We recovered something from Margaret’s garage,” he said.
Emily’s stomach tightened.
“What?”
“A box of old complaint files,” he replied. “And a bag of dog toys.”
Emily went still.
“One of them,” Reed said carefully, “has your puppy’s name written on the tag. But the others don’t.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“How many?”
