Chapter 6 - THE TEACHER WHO LIED
Classroom teacher Melissa Grant had signed the original incident report.
Statement:
Rear exit opened normally.
Children proceeded outside.
Now Erin showed her the photograph.
Melissa cried.
Then admitted:
The door did not open.
For approximately forty seconds.
Maybe less.
During the alarm, she pushed.
Nothing.
Another teacher yelled.
Someone removed the latch.
Children exited.
Owen tripped in the confusion after they finally got out.
Why lie?
Natalie told her:
“If the report says the door was blocked, the state will shut us down before they investigate.”
Melissa said:
“She told me no child was hurt by the door itself.”
Technically true.
Owen fell later.
Natalie framed the omission as:
separate cause.
Then:
“She said we’d correct the hardware and report the trip accurately.”
Melissa signed.
That was the cover-up.
Not a fake accident.
A materially incomplete safety report.
Natalie’s motive was not abstract greed.
