Chapter 1 - SIX WORDS

Claire Whitmore knew something was wrong the moment Khloe stopped crying.

Children do not always become quiet because they feel safe.

Sometimes they become quiet because fear has taken all the air.

The backyard barbecue at Claire’s father’s house had been loud all afternoon.

Music.

Smoke from the grill.

Beer bottles sweating on patio tables.

Her sister Veronica arguing about football with two cousins.

Derek laughing near the pool as though he had never once raised his voice in his life.

Claire had stepped inside for less than four minutes to wash barbecue sauce from her hands.

When she came back out, Khloe was gone.

“Khloe?”

No answer.

Claire checked the swing set.

The side garden.

The downstairs bathroom.

Then she found her six-year-old daughter crouched beside the laundry-room door inside the house, wrapped tightly in a pink towel someone had pulled around her shoulders after she apparently spilled lemonade down her dress.

Khloe was trembling.

Claire dropped to her knees.

“Baby. What happened?”

Khloe threw both arms around her mother.

Claire felt the little girl’s whole body shaking.

“Talk to me.”

Khloe pressed her face into Claire’s neck.

Then whispered six words.

“He said he’d hurt you, Mommy.”

Claire froze.

For one second, the world disappeared.

“Who?”

Khloe cried harder.

Claire pulled back gently.

“Baby, who said that?”

Khloe’s eyes moved toward the backyard.

Derek.

Claire’s boyfriend of eighteen months.

The man who helped with school pickup.

The man who brought Khloe strawberry pancakes on Saturdays.

The man who had been talking about moving into Claire’s house after Christmas.

Claire’s pulse went cold.

“What did he tell you not to say?”

Khloe shook her head frantically.

“I don’t want you hurt.”

Claire held her face in both hands.

“Nothing you tell me will make this your fault.”

Khloe’s lips trembled.

“He said I saw something.”

Claire stopped.

“What?”

But Khloe heard laughter outside and flinched so violently Claire did not push.

Not yet.

She wrapped the towel securely around her daughter, lifted her into both arms, and walked straight into the backyard.

Conversation died one table at a time.

Claire’s father looked up from the grill.

Veronica turned.

Derek stopped laughing.

Claire marched toward him with Khloe clinging around her neck.

“What did you do to my daughter?”

Derek stared.

Then laughed.

Actually laughed.

“She’s lying.”

Claire’s face changed.

“SHE’S SIX!”

Veronica rushed forward.

“Claire, stop.”

“Stay out of this.”

“Leave Derek alone!”

Veronica shoved Claire’s shoulder.

Claire twisted immediately, shielding Khloe behind her body.

“DON’T TOUCH US!”

Khloe sobbed and grabbed Claire’s shirt.

Then Claire’s father stormed forward.

Richard Whitmore.

Sixty-two.

Still broad-shouldered.

Still carrying the voice Claire had obeyed since childhood.

“Take your kid and get out.”

Claire stared at him.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“Dad, she just told me Derek threatened her.”

Richard pointed toward the gate.

“And Derek says she’s lying.”

Claire looked past him.

Derek stood behind Veronica.

Smirking.

Tiny.

Private.

A look meant only for Claire.

Something inside her shut off.

The tears disappeared.

The need to explain disappeared.

She moved Khloe gently behind her.

Veronica stepped forward again.

“Claire, you are ruining this family over a kid’s story.”

Claire slapped her.

The sound cracked across the patio.

Veronica stumbled backward.

Everyone gasped.

Richard raised one hand and pointed at Claire.

“Have you lost your mind?”

Claire slapped him too.

His head snapped slightly to one side.

Absolute shock.

Then Claire turned toward Derek.

His smile was gone.

He backed up.

“And you.”

She crossed the distance and slapped him across the face.

Derek staggered.

Claire planted herself between Khloe and all three of them.

“I SPOILED ALL OF YOU FOR TOO LONG!”

Silence.

Her voice shook now.

Not with fear.

With years.

“You forgot who the hell you are, didn’t you?”

Khloe pressed herself against Claire’s back.

Veronica held her cheek.

Richard stared.

Derek’s eyes moved toward the side door.

And Claire saw it.

May you like

He was not looking for an exit.

He was looking toward her father’s study.
