Chapter 5 - RICHARD'S VERSION OF FAMILY

Richard refused to come to Maya’s office.
He demanded Claire come to his house.
She said no.
For the first time in her life, Richard came when Claire summoned him.
He sat across from her in a conference room and looked older than sixty-two.
Not weak.
Smaller without his house around him.
“You embarrassed me.”
Claire stared.
“That’s your opening?”
“You slapped me in front of thirty people.”
“You told me to leave after your granddaughter said she was threatened.”
“She’s six.”
Claire’s face changed.
Maya spoke before she could.
“Mr. Whitmore, be very careful.”
Richard folded his arms.
“Children misunderstand.”
“Did you know Derek was photographing the proxy?”
Silence.
Claire leaned forward.
“Dad.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know my signature was already attached?”
He looked away.
“Yes.”
The answer hurt less than she expected.
Maybe because she already knew.
“Why?”
Richard’s jaw worked.
Then the family mythology came out.
Claire was difficult with money.
Too cautious.
Too controlling.
Too suspicious of deals.
Whitmore Logistics needed “decisive leadership.”
Veronica needed help.
The family needed liquidity.
Derek brought a buyer.
Richard believed Claire would eventually agree but would “drag everyone through six months of lawyers first.”
“So you skipped my consent.”
“I protected the family.”
Claire laughed.
“You keep using that word.”
“Because it matters.”
“Does Khloe matter?”
He flinched.
Claire continued.
“She is your family too.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you tell me to take her and get out?”
Richard looked down.
Because, he admitted, Derek had told him moments earlier that Khloe had wandered into the study and Claire was “using the child to create drama.”
Richard chose the adult story that protected the deal.
Not the child’s story that threatened it.
That was the betrayal.
Not confusion.
Priority.

Money first.
Granddaughter second.
