Chapter 8 - KHLOE ASKS THE QUESTION NO ADULT COULD ANSWER

Derek accepted a civil settlement before the fraud case fully developed.

The forged proxy had not been used successfully.

That limited some damages.

But attempted misrepresentation, misuse of Claire’s signature, and conflict-of-interest disclosures created serious exposure.

Trident fired the executive who had entertained undisclosed insider influence.

Derek’s professional reputation collapsed.

He denied threatening Khloe in the exact words she reported.

The child interview, however, remained credible and consistent.

A protective order barred him from contact with her.

Claire never spoke to him again.

That was deliberate.

No final confrontation.

No cinematic speech.

He had already taken enough of her time.

The harder conversations were with Khloe.

One night, months later, Khloe asked:

“Why did Grandpa believe Derek?”

Claire sat beside her bed.

“I don’t know all the reasons.”

“Did he think I lied?”

Claire’s throat tightened.

“Yes.”

Khloe looked hurt.

“Why?”

There was no age-appropriate answer that did not damage something.

Claire chose honesty without cruelty.

“Because grown-ups sometimes believe the story that makes their life easier.”

Khloe thought.

“Even if it hurts a kid?”

“Yes.”

“That’s stupid.”

Claire laughed softly through tears.

“Yes.”

Khloe reached for her hand.

“Are we still family with Grandpa?”

Claire thought.

“Family doesn’t disappear. But sometimes distance changes.”

“Because he was mean?”

“Because he has work to do before I trust him with you.”

May you like

Khloe nodded.

Children understand boundaries better than adults when adults stop decorating them with guilt.
