Chapter 2 - WHAT KHLOE SAW

Claire did not stay.

That mattered.

She did not continue fighting.

Did not demand a confession.

Did not let rage convince her that confrontation was the same as protection.

She took Khloe home.

Then called Maya Feldman.

Family attorney.

Old friend.

The person Claire trusted when emotion made facts slippery.

Maya’s first instruction was simple.

“Do not question Khloe repeatedly.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“I need to know what happened.”

“You need a child-safe forensic interview if this involves threats or coercion.”

Claire nodded even though Maya could not see her.

“Okay.”

“Was she physically injured?”

“No visible injury.”

“Good. Keep it that way. Write down her exact spontaneous words now.”

Claire wrote:

He said he’d hurt you, Mommy.

He said I saw something.

Nothing more.

The next morning, a trained child interviewer met with Khloe in a neutral setting.

Claire waited outside.

The forty-two minutes felt longer than labor.

When Maya finally came out, her expression had changed.

Not panic.

Concern.

“What?”

“Khloe saw Derek in your father’s study.”

Claire stared.

“When?”

“Yesterday afternoon.”

“What was he doing?”

“Photographing papers.”

Claire’s mind moved too fast.

“What papers?”

“She doesn’t know. But one had your picture clipped to it.”

Claire went cold.

Maya continued.

“Khloe walked in. Derek grabbed her wrist—not hard enough to leave injury according to her—and told her she had to keep quiet.”

Claire swallowed.

“What exactly did he say?”

“He told her if she told you, ‘your mommy could get hurt and it would be your fault.’”

Claire closed her eyes.

There it was.

Not a vague child misunderstanding.

A deliberate threat.

Maya continued.

“Khloe says Veronica came into the hallway right afterward.”

Claire looked up.

“Did Veronica hear him?”

“Khloe thinks so.”

“Then why did she defend him?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Claire did.

Or thought she did.

She remembered Veronica shoving her.

Leave Derek alone.

Not:

What happened?

Not:

Khloe, tell me.

Defense first.

That meant prior knowledge or fear.

Maybe both.

Claire then remembered Derek looking toward Richard’s study after the confrontation.

The papers.

Her picture.

Her father.

Something inside that room had frightened him more than being exposed as a man who threatened a six-year-old.

That afternoon, Claire accessed the family document portal she had built for her father years earlier.

Richard was terrible with technology.

Claire was not.

One folder had been opened at 3:12 p.m. the day of the barbecue.

ESTATE TRANSITION — C.W.

C.W.

Claire Whitmore.

She opened it.

Inside was a draft document she had never seen.

Whitmore Family Holdings — Voting Proxy and Successor Control Agreement.

It transferred temporary voting authority over Claire’s shares in three family businesses to Richard Whitmore.

With a secondary delegated authority to:

Veronica Whitmore.

And designated outside advisor:

Derek Lawson.

Claire stared at his name.

Her boyfriend.

Not family.

Not shareholder.

Not employee.

Advisor.

Her digital signature appeared at the bottom.

Claire had never signed it.
