Chapter 12 - THE COURT CASE

The criminal case focused on the throw.
No attempted-murder fantasy.
The skewer missed.
No physical injury.
Intent remained contested.
Carla faced charges appropriate to reckless endangerment and assault-related conduct under applicable law.
Her attorney emphasized:
anger,
lack of injury,
distance,
and no proven intent to strike Lily.
Prosecutors emphasized:
the object,
direction,
child victim,
Carla’s statement that Lily “deserved it,”
and witness testimony.
Carla eventually accepted a negotiated disposition.
Probation.
Anger-management intervention.
No contact with Lily.
Restrictions around Naomi.
Community service.
No decades in prison.
Naomi gave a victim-impact statement.
Short.
“My daughter should not have to be injured before this family recognizes danger.”
Then she said:
“I do not want maximum punishment.”
Carla looked up.
“I want consequences that do not disappear because our last name can afford private solutions.”
That was the point.
Carla’s face changed.
