Chapter 5 - GARNET'S EDITS
Incident 3 originally read:
Hazel upset about guest removals; Garnet failed to tell her capacity changed.
Garnet deleted:
Garnet failed to tell her capacity changed.
Incident 11 originally read:
Hazel called twice during planned quiet weekend; Garnet had not yet communicated request.
Garnet changed it to:
Hazel called repeatedly during no-contact weekend.
Amber stared.
“You edited them?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the log was supposed to be about Mom.”
Hazel heard about the edits later.
She did not shout.
That frightened Garnet more.
“You removed your own failures.”
“Yes.”
“You let Amber believe I violated a boundary you never gave me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I was embarrassed.”
Hazel looked at him.
“You’re not a coward because you hate conflict, Garnet. You’re a coward when you make someone else carry the consequences of the conflict you avoided.”
He swallowed.
Then asked something Hazel did not expect.
“Did I learn that from you?”
She stiffened.
When Garnet was young, Hazel solved problems for him.
Forgot school form?
Hazel called.
Coach conflict?
Hazel emailed.
Missed deadline?
Hazel negotiated.
She called it support.
Maybe she taught him that discomfort could be outsourced.
“Maybe some of it,” she said.
That answer mattered.
Then Elise reviewed all twelve incidents using the same structure:
Was a boundary actually stated?
Who stated it?
Who received it?
What happened immediately before the reaction?
Was Garnet’s role included?
The result was uncomfortable for everyone.
Three incidents were genuine Hazel oversteps.
Four were misunderstandings amplified by Garnet.
Three were ordinary requests labeled as interference.
Two were heavily shaped by Amber’s selective framing.
Then the glue.
There was no clever context.
Amber had been furious after the rehearsal.
Hazel learned in front of twenty people that her planned processional role had been removed.
Amber had shortened the procession.
Reasonable.
Garnet was supposed to tell Hazel.
He had not.
Hazel said sarcastically:
“Of course. Why would anyone tell me?”
Then stepped away for five minutes.
Amber wrote:
Hazel storms out after being told no.
The next morning Amber found clear adhesive among décor supplies.
She imagined Hazel sitting, standing, sticking, and the room laughing.
Then Amber would say:
“Relax. It’s just a joke.”
Garnet saw her applying it.
He laughed.
Then Hazel appeared.
“Don’t ruin the joke, Mom.”
The stunt should have ended there.
Instead, Hazel switched the chair.
Now Elise asked:
“Does Amber’s bad decision erase Hazel’s?”
No.
Hazel had knowingly redirected the trap.
Then a guest video surfaced.
In the background of a centerpiece video, Hazel could be seen moving both chairs.
But there was something else.
At the ballroom entrance, Amber was standing still.
Watching Hazel move them.
No one had noticed her there before.
