Chapter 10 - VANESSA DOES NOT STAY LOYAL
Vanessa’s loyalty lasted exactly as long as the project appeared salvageable.
When the trust suspended the $600,000 advance, Haven Crest missed its equity condition.
The lender delayed closing.
Investors demanded a capital plan.
Ethan blamed Margaret publicly.
Vanessa blamed Ethan privately.
“You said the trust money was guaranteed.”
“It was.”
“No. You assumed.”
He stared at her.
“You knew how the family office worked.”
“I knew what you told me.”
That mattered.
Vanessa was complicit in pressuring Margaret.
But Ethan had misrepresented his own financial control to his wife.
He told Vanessa:
the trust is basically mine,
Mom gets an allowance,
Harold handles paperwork.
She built financial projections around that assumption.
Not innocent.
Not fully informed either.
Their marriage became a conflict between two people discovering they had used each other’s confidence as due diligence.
Vanessa retained separate counsel.
Then gave investigators her messages with Ethan.
One text read:
If she won’t sign, scare her.
Ethan replied:
I know how to handle my mother.
Vanessa claimed “scare” meant threaten litigation.
