Chapter 7 - VIVIAN TURNS EMILY INTO THE VILLAIN
Vivian’s attorney attacked the recording.
Then attacked Emily.
She was sixteen.
Emotional.
Manipulable.
Traumatized by her father’s death.
Angry at her grandmother.
Protective of her sick mother.
All true.
The attorney argued Mara recruited a child into an adult legal dispute.
That accusation landed.
Rachel looked at Mara.
“Did we?”
Mara did not dodge.
“I let Emily participate after she came to me with evidence.”
“She’s sixteen.”
“Yes.”
“Was that right?”
Mara took a long breath.
“It may not have been.”
That mattered.
Good people can make bad tactical choices.
Rachel refused to turn Emily into a perfect heroine.
Emily had lied.
Performed cruelty.
Physically humiliated her mother.
Entered a dangerous conflict.
She had also exposed fraud.
Both were true.
In family court, Vivian argued Emily’s behavior proved Rachel’s household was unstable.
Emily testified.
The judge asked:
“Did anyone force you to smash your mother’s face into the cake?”
Emily cried.
“No.”
“Why did you do it?”
“Because I thought if Grandma stopped trusting me, she’d destroy the evidence.”
“Do you regret it?”
“Yes.”
“Do you believe your mother is incompetent?”
“No.”
“Do you want to live with your grandmother?”
Emily looked directly at Vivian.

“No.”
That ended the emotional fiction more effectively than any adult argument.
