Chapter 1 - THE BRIDE HE LEFT ON THE ROAD

Lena Hart woke to shattered glass beneath her palms.

The wedding car lay twisted against a concrete barrier. White flowers from the rear window were scattered across the highway. Smoke lifted from the crushed hood while ambulance lights flashed against torn metal.

Her white gown had ripped from hip to hem. Blood ran lightly from her temple, and every breath sent pain through her ribs.

“Ethan.”

She tried to stand and collapsed.

Then she saw him.

Her husband was carrying Rachel Cole toward the ambulance.

Rachel's red bridesmaid dress was dirty, but the only visible injury was a shallow cut across one arm. She had both hands around Ethan's neck, her face buried against his damaged tuxedo.

Lena crawled across the road.

“Ethan! Please!”

He heard her.

He looked back for one second.

His bride was on her knees amid broken glass, reaching toward him. Rachel was conscious in his arms. The nearest paramedic was shouting for Ethan to put her down and help identify the driver.

Ethan looked from Lena to Rachel.

Then he turned away and kept walking.

Something inside Lena broke more completely than the car.

“You're leaving me?”

Ethan did not answer.

Three days later, the door to Lena's private hospital room flew open.

Ethan stormed in wearing dark clothes instead of his ruined tuxedo. A bruise marked his jaw, but anger—not pain—controlled his face.

“What did you tell the police?”

Lena lay beneath white blankets with her ribs wrapped and one wrist immobilized. She said nothing.

Dr. Warren entered behind Ethan and quietly closed the door. His serious expression made clear that he had not invited the visitor.

Ethan leaned over the bed.

“It was an accident. Say it.”

The fear in Lena's face disappeared.

She reached beneath the blanket and removed a sealed evidence envelope. She placed it on her lap.

“No.”

Ethan stopped.

From beneath the envelope, Lena drew out a damaged smartphone. Its screen was cracked, one edge burned from the wreck.

He recognized it immediately.

“Where did you get that?”

Lena did not answer.

She removed one more object: a small audio recorder scratched by impact.

Ethan's anger changed to panic.

Lena pressed one button.

A faint recorded voice began to play.

Ethan lunged toward the bed.

“Give me that!”

He grabbed for the recorder. Lena pulled it against her chest with both hands despite the pain in her wrist. Ethan reached again, trying to tear it from her grip.

Dr. Warren stepped forward in alarm.

Lena refused to let go.
