Chapter 6 - THE ACCOUNT IN LENA'S NAME

The account was opened electronically using Lena's identification, address, tax number, and digital signature.

The signature certificate was valid.

Six months earlier, Ethan asked Lena to approve what he called a donor reserve account. She entered her password while he stood beside her. The screen displayed foundation branding and a single authorization button.

Forensic analysts later found hidden browser code that redirected her approval to the new bank account.

Lena had authenticated the transaction without reading the underlying certificate.

She had been deceived, but her carelessness was real.

Worse, two payments from the account covered wedding expenses: flowers and the chapel deposit. Ethan told Lena those were gifts from an anonymous donor who loved her mother's work.

Foundation money had partially paid for the wedding.

Ethan used that fact to argue Lena benefited and knew enough to ask questions. His lawyers presented messages in which she thanked him for “making Mom part of the wedding.”

Lena cried when she read them, then instructed Maya to disclose every personal benefit. She offered to place equivalent funds into escrow before the audit concluded.

The foundation board accepted the repayment but kept her suspended. Good intentions did not restore confidence automatically.

Rachel's phone showed she knew about the wedding payments. Her plea negotiations now included conspiracy, wire fraud, and falsification charges. Prosecutors offered a reduced recommendation, not freedom.

Ethan continued denying criminal intent. He claimed Rachel designed the vendors and manipulated his investment accounts. Several messages were ambiguous enough to support parts of his defense.

Then investigators recovered the complete audio from the recorder.

It lasted eleven minutes.

The first half concerned the financial scheme. The final ninety seconds captured the crash.

Lena demanded that Ethan pull over. Rachel tried to take the phone back. Ethan said, “Neither of you is ruining this.” Fabric moved. Lena screamed for him to watch the road. The engine accelerated.

There was still no statement that he intended a collision.

But the vehicle's data showed he pressed the accelerator while reaching across the cabin.

Ethan's expert offered an alternative: impact forces could corrupt pedal readings.

The prosecution needed independent reconstruction.

The highway traffic camera appeared to have been pointed away from the crash.

Then a delivery driver came forward with dashcam footage from the opposite lane.
