Chapter 2 - THE FIRST SEVEN SECONDS
Dr. Warren caught Ethan by the shoulder and called for security.
Ethan released the recorder only when two hospital officers entered. Even then, he insisted the device belonged to him and contained private marital conversations. He accused Lena of stealing evidence from the crash.
“You came into an injured patient's room and tried to take it by force,” Dr. Warren said. “I witnessed that.”
Police arrived minutes later. The recorder and damaged phone were resealed. Lena had been permitted to view them only because Detective June Alvarez wanted to confirm whether she recognized the voices.
The seven seconds played before Ethan lunged were unclear but unmistakable.
Rachel's voice said, “You were supposed to delete the transfers before she saw them.”
Ethan answered, “Get the phone.”
Then Lena shouted, “Watch the road!”
The recording dissolved into tires, impact, and breaking glass.
It was not a full confession. It did not identify which transfers Rachel meant, when the words were spoken, or whether anyone intended the crash.
Ethan's attorney called it an illegally obtained fragment. The recorder belonged to Samuel Boyd, the professional chauffeur scheduled to drive the vintage wedding car. But shortly before departure, Ethan dismissed Samuel and decided to drive himself. Samuel left the small recorder inside after using it to document a mechanical concern that morning.
The damaged phone belonged to Rachel.
A paramedic found it trapped beneath a folded layer of Lena's gown. Lena remembered grabbing it during an argument in the car, but not how it ended there after the collision.
Ethan was escorted out of the hospital. He was not arrested for the crash that day. Vehicle investigators had not yet ruled out mechanical failure, and the audio alone did not establish recklessness.
Rachel gave police a different account.
She said Lena became jealous after seeing an innocent message, took her phone, and attacked her from the front passenger seat. Ethan looked away from the road only because he was trying to separate them. Rachel claimed he carried her first because she appeared unable to walk and Lena was already moving.
Photographs showed Lena crawling and Rachel later walking beside the ambulance without assistance.
That made Ethan's choice cruel.
It did not make the collision deliberate.
Before leaving the hospital, Ethan filed an emergency request to prevent Lena from accessing accounts belonging to the Hart Family Recovery Foundation. His petition alleged that pain medication and jealousy had made her irrational.
