Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN IN THE RED DRESS
Rachel changed lawyers.
She entered a proffer agreement allowing prosecutors to hear her account before deciding what cooperation was worth. Nothing prevented charges if she lied.
Rachel admitted the affair began eleven months before the wedding. She also admitted creating two vendor companies and moving foundation money at Ethan's direction. She kept six hundred thousand dollars. Ethan's investment vehicle received more than four million.
“Why attend the wedding?” Alvarez asked.
“Because Lena trusted me,” Rachel said. “And because Ethan said after the marriage, he'd end it with me without exposing the accounts.”
Rachel had not been trapped in the same way Lena was. She had choices, money, legal education, and months to report the theft. Ethan manipulated her fear of prosecution, but she knowingly helped him steal.
Her cooperation did not erase that.
On the wedding morning, Rachel learned Ethan planned to transfer the remaining funds and blame her. She copied messages onto a second phone—the damaged device—and intended to use them as leverage.
During the drive to the reception, Lena saw a message appear on the cracked screen: After tonight, the foundation problem is hers.
She took the phone and demanded an explanation.
Rachel said Ethan reached across Lena to grab it. Lena said he drove with one hand while pulling at her wrist. Rachel remembered Lena shouting about the road.
The recorder likely held the complete argument.
Audio technicians recovered additional data from its damaged memory. The new section captured Ethan saying, “Once she's my wife, the signatures look like family decisions.”
That statement suggested concealment.
It did not accurately describe the law. Marriage did not automatically make Lena responsible for Ethan's crimes or shield transfers. It showed what Ethan believed, not what he legally accomplished.
The phone warrant was granted. Rachel provided the passcode. Investigators found financial messages, intimate photographs, draft invoices, and instructions to delete backups.
They also found a voice memo recorded the morning of the wedding.
In it, Rachel told Ethan she would confess to Lena before the ceremony.
Ethan replied, “If you do, I'll tell the board every account has her approval—including the one you opened in her name.”
Judge Porter searched foundation records for that account.
