Vertex’s legal team gave Morgan Systems a forensic access report.
The file was received.
Automated scanning inspected metadata and archive structure.
No engineer opened source code.
No business employee accessed customer notes.
The package remained encrypted at rest in quarantine.
Counsel generated hashes.
Then, under a negotiated protocol, the file was deleted after both sides preserved necessary evidence.
Vertex refused to sign a statement saying:
Nothing was disclosed.
Maya Brooks explained:
“Transmission occurred. We can only say no substantive human review occurred.”
That wording helped.
It did not erase the breach.
But it contained the damage.
Adrian also provided Claire’s earlier messages showing he had told her:
do not send confidential material.
That destroyed Claire’s hope of claiming the competitor had encouraged her.
He had not.
Her decision was hers.
Vertex’s quarantine environment created an evidentiary advantage no one expected.
Every attempted access generated logs.
There were none beyond legal and automated security processes.
The file was never mounted by engineering systems.
No source files were extracted.
No customer-note document was opened.
That allowed Morgan Systems to tell clients something stronger than:
we hope nobody looked.
They could say:
forensic records show no substantive human review at Vertex.
Stonebrook’s chief risk officer still replied:
“You sent it.”
Ethan said:
“Yes.”
That answer mattered.
