Chapter 5 - ADRIAN
Adrian Cole was not waiting to steal Morgan Systems’ code.
He was wary immediately.
He replied:
If you are talking about confidential company material, do not send it.
Claire ignored that.
She wrote:
He keeps everything on his laptop.
Adrian answered:
Stop.
Then:
If you have a marital dispute, get a lawyer.
Claire deleted the thread from her phone.
But not from the cloud backup.
Three days later, after another argument with Ethan, Claire reopened the conversation.
She sent one message:
I’m serious.
Adrian did not reply.
That silence angered her.
She found Ethan’s ATLAS_FINAL_PACKAGE.zip in a folder on his desktop.
The file had no password.
She copied it to her phone.
Then sent it to Adrian anyway.
The email arrived.
Vertex’s secure mail gateway quarantined the attachment automatically.
Source-code archive.
Large compressed file.
External sender.
Adrian received a notification.
He called Vertex general counsel, Maya Brooks.
“Do not open this.”
Maya read the sender name.
Claire Morgan.
She knew Ethan was married.
She asked:
“Did you request it?”
“No.”
“Did anyone at Vertex?”
“No.”
Maya ordered the message preserved but blocked from technical staff.
Then she called Morgan Systems’ outside counsel.
That decision prevented the incident from becoming much worse.
Adrian later told investigators why he never replied after Claire’s second message.
He assumed she was angry and trying to provoke Ethan.
He did not want to be drawn into a marriage dispute.
He also knew enough corporate law to understand that receiving confidential competitor material could become a nightmare.
Vertex had its own financing process underway.
A trade-secret scandal could hurt both companies.
That was why Adrian’s first instinct was not curiosity.
It was containment.
His board later praised the decision.
