Chapter 14 - THE FRIEND WHO WAITED TOO LONG

Russell invited Arthur to dinner.

No case talk.

That lasted eleven minutes.

Then Arthur said:

“I’m still angry with you.”

Russell nodded.

“I know.”

“You saw Martin.”

“Yes.”

“You recognized him.”

“Yes.”

“You waited.”

“Yes.”

Arthur looked at him.

“Why didn’t you trust me with uncertainty?”

Russell thought.

“Because I spent thirty years investigating things before speaking. I forgot friendship isn’t an investigation.”

Arthur sat back.

That answer was better than an excuse.

Then Russell continued:

“I thought protecting you meant preventing an accusation I couldn’t support.”

“You protected yourself from being wrong.”

“Yes.”

Arthur smiled faintly.

“There it is.”

Russell lifted his glass.

“To being wrong.”

Arthur tapped his own glass against it.

Not forgiveness.

Progress.

Then Russell asked:

“What happens with the trust?”

Arthur had rewritten its governance.

No spouse could activate financial authority alone.

Capacity questions required independent medical assessment.

Major property transactions required co-signature from an independent protector.

Emergency authority expired automatically unless renewed after review.

Arthur also changed his own role.

He added an advisory successor committee instead of naming one family member.

Russell raised an eyebrow.

“You finally stopped believing one trusted person is safer than a system.”

Arthur nodded.

“Painfully.”

Then Russell asked:

“And your memory?”

Arthur laughed.

“Still terrible.”

“Good.”

“Why good?”

“Means you’re old, not invincible.”

Arthur pointed at him.

“Careful.”

They laughed.

Then Arthur’s phone reminder chimed.

EVENING MEDICATION.

He looked at it.

For months, that sound made his stomach tighten.

This time he took out the new pharmacy-sealed packet.

Checked the label.

Checked the date.

Then swallowed the pill with water.

Russell watched.

“You going to inspect every pill forever?”

Arthur looked at him.

May you like

“Maybe for a while.”

That was honest too.
