Chapter 4 - THE CONFUSION FILE

Police searched Elaine’s laptop under warrant.

What they found was not one dramatic confession.

It was worse.

A folder labeled:

ARTHUR COGNITIVE.

Videos.

Notes.

Dates.

Medical summaries.

Arthur watched only three clips.

In the first, he searched his study for a folder.

Elaine filmed him.

“Arthur, you moved it yesterday.”

He sounded irritated.

“I did not.”

The video ended.

Police later found another clip from ten minutes earlier.

Elaine moving the folder herself.

In the second, Arthur arrived late for a cardiology appointment.

Elaine filmed him in the parking lot.

“You wrote down ten.”

Arthur checked his phone.

“It says ten.”

The clinic appointment was actually nine.

Then investigators found a call log.

Martin had called Arthur the day before pretending to confirm the appointment.

He gave the wrong time.

In the third video, Arthur accused Elaine of changing his pills.

She looked at the camera.

“This is what I’ve been dealing with.”

Arthur stopped the playback.

“I sound insane.”

Mara answered:

“You sound like someone being manipulated.”

Then she added something he did not want.

“Not every incident was staged.”

Arthur looked at her.

Before the suspicious medication appeared, he had mixed up two board dates.

Once, he accidentally took a morning pill twice.

He had also sent an angry email accusing a trust administrator of withholding money.

The administrator had simply been late with a report.

Elaine’s file contained those real mistakes beside staged ones.

That made the narrative stronger.

Arthur sat back.

“She used the truth to build a lie.”

“Yes.”

Then Bell brought another item.

An email from Elaine to Martin:

Need enough pattern for both doctors. Not dramatic. Consistent.

Arthur read it slowly.

Not dramatic.

Consistent.

They were manufacturing a condition.

Then another:

If he refuses the lake offer again, we move to certification.

Arthur’s hands began shaking.

Elaine did not need him dead.

She needed him alive and disbelieved.
