No secret diary.
No confession.
Old documents.
Medical bills.
Insurance statements.
Neighborhood association notices.
A few photographs.
Then one emergency-room discharge sheet.

dizziness,
reported fall.
Claire almost ignored it.
Then she saw handwriting in the margin.
Patient privately reports spouse grabbed upper arms during argument. Declines police contact.
Claire stared.
Spouse.
Robert.
She kept reading.
Another record.
Nine months before death.
Primary-care visit.
Assessment:
stress-related insomnia.
Social note:
patient states husband monitors phone and transportation.
No formal domestic-violence diagnosis.
No protective order.
No criminal case.
But a pattern.
Claire’s hands shook.
She photographed everything.
Then made the mistake that changed the next six months.
She asked Robert:
“Did you ever hurt Mom?”
His face went blank.
“What?”
Claire showed him the ER note.
Robert stared at the paper.
Then said:
“Your mother was confused.”
Claire felt cold.
“About you grabbing her?”
“She fell.”
“That note is from a different year.”
Robert’s jaw tightened.
“Give me the file.”
