Chapter 6 - THE BRUISES
Robert’s violence toward Claire escalated only after she refused to give him the files.
First incident:
he grabbed both arms during an argument.
Second:
he shoved her against a cabinet.
Third:
the bruises Ethan found.
That happened in Robert’s garage two days earlier.
Claire had gone there because Robert said he wanted to return childhood photographs.
Instead he demanded:
“Tell the insurer you misunderstood the records.”
Claire said no.
Robert blocked the garage door.
She tried to leave.
He grabbed her blouse from behind and forced her back.
She hit the wall.
No head injury.
No broken bones.
Bruises across upper back and shoulders.
Then Robert let go.
The garage security system captured no interior video.
Only door activity.
Robert opened the garage at 6:12 p.m.
Claire arrived at 6:18.
Garage closed at 6:19.
Opened again at 6:41.
Claire’s car exited at 6:43.
Twenty-three minutes.
Robert told police:
“We argued. She became hysterical. I restrained her from leaving while she was upset.”
Claire stared at that statement.
Restrained her.
Not grabbed.
Not blocked.
Restrained.
He had already converted control into protection.
The same vocabulary he used for Laura.
Immediately.
As if the action itself scared him.
He said:
“Look what you make me do.”
That sentence followed Claire home.
She put on a loose blouse.
Told Ethan she had pulled a muscle.
Slept facing away from him.
For two days she hid.

Because admitting what happened would force the family story to become real.
