Chapter 7 - DIANE'S LOGIC
Lauren Pierce refused to let Diane be reduced to a monster.
That was not mercy.
It was strategy.
Diane had spent years reading parenting books focused on:
consistency,
boundaries,
consequences,
non-negotiable rules.
Nothing she read instructed locking a child without adequate water.
Diane’s parenting books became a controversy outside court.
Online commenters blamed specific authors.
The prosecution did not.
None instructed parents to:
lock a child continuously,
shut off bathroom water,
ignore illness,
or withhold direct observation.
Experts warned against turning the case into:
book made mother abusive.
The problem was selective reading.
Diane highlighted passages about:
consistency,
extinction bursts,
not rewarding tantrums.
She ignored passages about:
developmental limits,
repair,
connection,
safety,
and professional help.
Her notes in the margins repeatedly said:
DO NOT GIVE IN.
Almost nothing about:
CHECK WHAT THE CHILD NEEDS.
The books became evidence of how Diane justified herself.
Not a cause that removed responsibility.
Nothing told her to ignore illness.
But Diane absorbed one concept obsessively:
If you give in during escalation, you reinforce the behavior.
Emily learned that crying reopened arguments.
Diane learned that ignoring crying ended them.
Then Emily learned to scream louder.
Diane learned to wait longer.
The pattern escalated.
Diane told investigators:
“She knew if she apologized, she could come out.”
Was that true?
No written rule.
No clear agreement.
Michael said the punishment was supposed to last one night.
Diane said:
“Until she took responsibility.”
Responsibility for what?
Flooding the bathroom.
Calling Diane “crazy.”
Telling school staff she was locked in.
That last point mattered.
Diane denied the school disclosure was part of punishment.
But one text to her sister read:
Emily is telling strangers family business now. She needs to learn there are consequences for lying about her own mother.
