Chapter 1 - WHAT PAPERS?

Margaret Whitmore was standing at the bottom of the marble staircase when Vivien came up behind her.
One second, Margaret had both hands on her cane.
The next, a hard shove struck between her shoulders.
She pitched forward.
The cane clattered across marble.
Margaret fell onto one hip and cried out.
“VIVIEN!”
Vivien immediately stepped back.
Straightened her cream dress.
Smoothed one hand over her diamond ring.
By the time Nathaniel ran into the entrance hall, she looked almost composed.
“Mom!”
He dropped beside Margaret.
One arm went around her shoulders.
“Are you hurt?”
“My hip.”
“Can you move?”
“Yes.”
He helped her sit upright.
Margaret pointed at Vivien.
Nathaniel stood.
“What did you do to my mother?”
Vivien placed one hand over her chest.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“She fell by herself.”
Margaret snapped:
“She pushed me.”
Vivien grabbed Nathaniel’s arm.
“Her condition is getting worse.”
Margaret looked furious.
“She’s lying.”
For one second Nathaniel hesitated.
Then a small wooden toy struck the floor.
Everyone turned.
Lily Delgado stood near the hallway in a pale yellow dress.
Three years old.
Silent.
Watching.
Nathaniel walked toward her and crouched.
“Lily?”
She stared at Vivien.
“What did you see?”
Vivien went pale.
Lily pointed.
“She pushed Grandma.”
Nathaniel froze.
Vivien stepped forward.
“She’s just a child.”
Then Lily pointed toward a dark medical folder on the entry table.
“She changed Grandma’s papers too.”
Margaret’s eyes widened.
Nathaniel slowly stood.
“What papers?”
Vivien looked at the folder.
Then toward the front door.
Nathaniel noticed.
He reached the table first.
Inside the folder were neatly formatted pages:
CONFUSION EPISODES.
MEDICATION REFUSAL.
UNSAFE WANDERING.
PROGRESSIVE COGNITIVE DECLINE.
RECOMMENDATION FOR SUPERVISED DECISION-MAKING.
Nathaniel looked at his mother.
Margaret stared at the pages.
“I never said any of that.”
Vivien whispered:
“Nathaniel—”
He closed the folder.
“No.”
May you like
Then looked directly at his wife.
“You’re going to explain every page.”
