Chapter 7 - THE FIANCÉ WHO TRIED TO SAY HE LOVED HER
Ethan asked Claire to meet alone.
She refused.
Then agreed with Robert in the next room.
No secrets.
Ethan looked exhausted.
“Did you ever love me?” Claire asked.
“Yes.”
“Before the land?”
“Yes.”
“After you learned?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you walk away from the project?”
He answered:
“Because I thought I could have both.”
There.
Not cowardice only.
Entitlement.
He believed:
he could marry Claire,
protect her emotionally,
let Vivian use the marriage procedurally,
then fix the land issue later.
He planned to vote for an alternate route after obtaining his trust seat.
Claire stared.
“You were going to sign the acknowledgment, activate your vote, then betray your mother.”
“Yes.”
“And you didn’t think I deserved to know.”
“I thought if you knew, you’d refuse the wedding.”
“Correct.”
“I know.”
Claire laughed.
“Then your plan depended on taking away my choice.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
That was the central betrayal.
Then he admitted the wedding-dress humiliation had shocked him.
He knew Vivian planned to “teach Claire a lesson.”
He thought:
different flowers,
wrong veil,
maybe make her wear a family necklace.
Not clown costume.
Claire asked:
“Would that have been okay?”
“No.”
“But you laughed.”
Ethan whispered:
“I was nervous.”
Claire looked at him.
“You keep using weakness like innocence.”
That line ended the meeting.
Then the trust committee met.
Vivian argued medical campus public benefit.
Charles argued conflict.
Bank trustee asked for independent route review.
Project paused.
St. Anselm threatened to walk if access uncertainty continued.
Hundreds of jobs genuinely at stake.

People mocked her.
Others praised her.
Claire hated both.

Then Vivian went on television.
Calm.
“We wish Claire well. Our family will not discuss private emotional matters.”

While public pressure targeted Robert.
Then she added:
“The medical campus remains vital to thousands of families.”
Claire watched.
