Claire took one week off work.
Turned off notifications.
Met only with Maya Foster, an independent attorney Daniel recommended but did not supervise.
Maya reviewed:
the marital acknowledgment,
trust rules,
land title,
easement,
project approvals,
wedding communications.
Then said:
“You have more leverage than you think.”
Claire did not like the word.
“Everyone keeps saying leverage.”
Maya nodded.
“Fine. You have choices.”
Better.
Choice one:
walk away entirely.
Let Robert fight land.
Let Whitmores fight trust.
No involvement.
Choice two:
join title litigation because Claire had future beneficial interest.
Choice three:
negotiate.
Claire asked:
“What would negotiation look like?”
Maya smiled.
“Not selling your father’s land unless he wants to.”
Then she explained.
St. Anselm needed reliable access.
Whitmore needed project certainty.
Vivian’s conflict threatened trust approval.
Bennett easement created alternate route.
A settlement could:
preserve the wooded tract,
use part of VWM land,
grant a limited Bennett easement,
compensate Robert fairly,
require public disclosure of Vivian’s conflict,
and remove the marital acknowledgment entirely.
Claire listened.
Then:
“What does Ethan get?”
“Nothing unless you choose.”

Then Ethan turned thirty-five in eleven days.
No marriage.
No voting seat.
Vivian’s urgency increased.
She offered Claire $3 million personally to sign a development acknowledgment without marriage.
Claire laughed.
Then Vivian doubled.
$6 million.
Robert almost lost his mind.
Claire said no.
Then Vivian did something smarter.
She approached Robert directly.
$10 million for twelve acres.
Above appraisal proportionally.
Robert hesitated.

“If I sell, will you think I betrayed you?”

He flinched.
Claire continued gently:
“She doesn’t get to control you either.”

Choice applied both ways.
Robert asked:
“What do you want?”
Claire answered:
“I want you to know exactly what you’re selling and why.”
He nodded.
Then Maya’s investigator found one more fact.
St. Anselm had never required the Bennett route.
Whitmore Development told them it was the only feasible route.
