Chapter 3 - THE ROSTER BLAKE DIDN'T WRITE

Ethan did not post the video.
He did not send it to parents.
He did something Blake did not expect.
He sent it privately to the district athletic director.
Name:
Rachel Pierce.
Former college player.
No patience for spectacle.
She watched the clip once.
Then asked:
“Was there physical contact before you started recording?”
“Yes.”
“Did you see it?”
“Yes.”
“Did your son?”
“He was the one against the locker.”
Rachel’s expression hardened.
Then Ethan added:
“There’s more.”
He told her Blake had threatened Noah’s roster chances if he complained.
That made it bigger than inappropriate contact.
Retaliation.
Rachel requested every tryout evaluation sheet before the final roster was posted.
Blake resisted.
“Coach discretion.”
Rachel replied:
“Not when a complaint involves threatened selection retaliation.”
That afternoon, she appointed an independent three-person panel to observe the final tryout:
assistant athletic director,
another school’s basketball coach,
and a PE teacher from outside Hawthorne.
Blake could still coach the drills.
He could not unilaterally finalize the roster.
He was furious.
Noah knew none of this until Ethan told him in the parking lot.
“Does that mean I automatically make it?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Ethan looked surprised.
Noah continued:
“I don’t want that.”
He wanted the court.
Not pity.
Tryout day came.
Noah played badly for the first five minutes.
Hands tight.
Breathing shallow.
Blake watching.
Then Ethan caught his eye from the bleachers.
No speech.
Just one hand over his own chest.
Breathe.
Noah did.
Then he played.
Not perfect.
Smart.
He made the extra pass.
Drew a defender.
Hit an open three.
Stayed in front of Tyler twice.
Tyler still had better size.
Noah had better decision-making.
The panel took notes.
Blake kept writing too.
Afterward, players changed.
Then the roster was pinned up outside the gym.
Blake walked toward it with a smug smile.
“Now he’ll learn.”
Students crowded around.
Then Blake read.
His smile vanished.
His eyes widened.
Ethan placed one hand on Noah’s shoulder.
“Go ahead, Coach.”
He pointed toward the roster.
“Read it out loud.”
Blake stared.
The first surprise:
NOAH COLE — SELECTED.
The second:
TYLER MASON — SELECTED.
No revenge cut.
Both had earned spots.
Then the third line:
TEAM HEAD COACH — INTERIM APPOINTMENT PENDING DISTRICT REVIEW.
Blake’s name was gone.
He turned toward Rachel Pierce, who stood at the far end of the hall.
She said:
“You’re suspended from team duties pending investigation.”
Blake’s face went red.
“You can’t do this over one emotional parent.”
Rachel held up the evaluation sheets.
“No.”
Then another set.
“We’re doing it over altered tryout scores.”
Noah stared.
Blake went still.
Independent panel scores:
Noah ranked sixth overall.
Tyler fourth.
Blake’s submitted scores had Noah ranked seventeenth.
Below players who had missed half the drills.
Rachel continued:
“And this is not the first season.”
Blake looked at Ethan.
Not angry now.
Afraid.
Ethan said nothing.
May you like
Noah understood.
The roster was only the beginning.
