Chapter 7 - THE GAME NOAH ALMOST QUIT

The interim coach was Denise Parker.

Forty-four.

PE teacher.

Former college guard.

She did not care about Hawthorne family politics.

At first, Noah liked that.

Then she benched him.

First scrimmage.

Six minutes.

Noah made two bad passes.

Denise pulled him.

“Sit.”

Noah’s face burned.

After practice:

“Why?”

“Because you were playing scared.”

“I wasn’t.”

“You were trying not to make mistakes.”

“That’s not the same.”

“It is on offense.”

Noah went home furious.

Ethan listened.

Then:

“You want me to call?”

“No.”

Good.

Next practice, Denise benched Tyler for lazy defense.

Tyler argued.

She benched him longer.

No donor exception.

That helped Noah trust her.

Then the first game.

Noah played nine minutes.

Scored zero.

Missed four shots.

Team won.

Online parent comments started.

Why is Cole even on roster?

Political pick.

Too small.

Ethan saw them.

Did not show Noah.

Noah found them anyway.

Of course.

He told Ethan:

“I’m quitting.”

Ethan did not say no.

That surprised him.

“You can.”

Noah stared.

“What?”

“You can quit.”

“You said—”

“I said don’t quit because Blake scares you.”

Ethan continued:

“If you hate basketball, quit.”

Noah looked at the driveway hoop through the window.

He did not hate basketball.

He hated being watched.

Different.

The next morning he trained.

Not to prove Blake wrong.

To make the game feel like his again.

He practiced without Ethan timing him.

Without phone.

Without scores.

Just shooting.

That afternoon, Tyler arrived unexpectedly.

Noah stared.

“What are you doing?”

“My dad said I should apologize.”

“Then go home.”

Tyler looked embarrassed.

“Okay.”

He turned.

Noah stopped him.

“Wait.”

Tyler faced him.

“Did Blake tell you to shove me?”

“Sometimes.”

“Why?”

“Said you needed toughness.”

“Did you like doing it?”

Tyler hesitated.

“Sometimes.”

Good.

Ugly truth.

Then:

“I was mad you kept beating me in ball-handling drills.”

Noah almost smiled.

“Because you’re slow.”

Tyler laughed.

“Because you’re twelve pounds.”

They played one-on-one.

Tyler won 11–7.

Noah made him work.

Then Tyler said:

“Coach Blake told me you’d never make varsity later.”

Noah froze.

“When?”

“Last year.”

Before tryouts.

Before the current season.

Blake had been making the decision for a long time.

Tyler had not realized how strange that was until now.

Then he added:

“He said your dad embarrassed him once and Cole boys need to learn where they belong.”

There.

Retaliation became explicit.

Ethan gave the statement to Rachel.

Blake’s suspension moved toward termination review.
