Chapter 11 - THE SECOND HEARING

Three years after Emma died, Tyler had a major review hearing.
Not release automatically.
Progress review.
Sarah was invited to submit a statement.
She almost declined.
Then decided to attend.
Tyler was sixteen.
Taller.
Face older.
Still a child in some ways.
He addressed Sarah directly only after permission.
“I’m sorry.”
First time.
Sarah felt nothing at first.
Then anger.
Then sadness.
He continued:
“I used to think because I didn’t want her dead, I wasn’t responsible for her dying.”
Sarah looked at him.
He said:
“I know that’s not true.”
Judge Hale asked:
“What changed?”
Tyler answered:
“They made me stop talking about what I meant and talk about what I chose.”
Sarah remembered the judge’s old sentence:
You chose a risk you could not measure.
Then Tyler said:
“I chose her fear because I thought it would be funny.”
No excuse.
No childhood trauma speech.
Just the act.
Sarah cried.
Then Judge Hale maintained placement with a gradual transition plan dependent on continued progress.
Sarah expected to be furious.
She wasn’t.
Not because she forgave.
Because the hearing made sense.
Then Judge Hale spoke privately with her afterward.
“You once asked what about your daughter.”
Sarah nodded.
“I remember.”
“I gave you a legal answer when you needed a human one.”
Sarah looked at him.
“What was the human one?”
He paused.
“Nothing we do to Tyler gives Emma back.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
Finally.
May you like
Not justice language.
Truth.
