Chapter 12 - THE SON WHO WASN'T A CALDER
Margaret told Peter the truth.
She had been unable to carry another child after Rachel.
Years later, she and her husband adopted Peter privately.
He was two months old.
They never told him.
Peter felt as though forty-two years had shifted beneath his feet.
Rachel knew.
She had known since she was a teenager.
Nathan eventually learned too.
That explained why Nathan selected Peter as successor trustee.
He believed Peter, not being biologically tied to either side of the family, might act independently if the marriage collapsed.
Rachel interpreted it differently.
To her, Nathan had trusted an outsider over his wife.
Peter now understood one root of her resentment.
But Rachel made another move.
She challenged Peter’s eligibility as successor trustee.
The trust described the successor as “my brother-in-law, Peter Calder, son of Margaret and Robert Calder.”
Rachel’s attorneys argued the description was factually inaccurate because Peter was adopted.
It was legally weak.
But it bought delay.
Again.
Every delay kept Rachel’s control alive.
Claire countered that adoption made Peter legally their son.
The judge agreed preliminarily.
Rachel appealed.
Then she petitioned to remove Peter entirely for conflict of interest, arguing his newfound adoption trauma made him emotionally hostile toward the Calder family.
Peter almost admired the audacity.
Rachel could turn anything into a weapon.
Meanwhile, police pressure on Mason increased.
He finally accepted a cooperation agreement.
He admitted modifying Nathan’s brake line.
Peter went cold.
But Mason insisted he had not intended to cause a crash.
Rachel wanted the line weakened enough to frighten Nathan and delay his trip to an attorney.
Mason claimed he cut it only partially.
He believed Nathan would notice poor braking immediately.
“Rachel told me he’d call a tow truck.”
Instead, Nathan drove onto the highway.
“Did Rachel order it?”
Mason hesitated.
“Yes.”
That should have ended everything.
Rachel anticipated him.
Her attorney produced recordings Mason had secretly made during their relationship.
In one, Mason threatened to “make Rachel pay” if she ever left him.
Another showed him discussing tampering with cars years earlier.
Rachel claimed Mason acted independently and now blamed her for revenge.
His testimony became vulnerable.
Again.
But Mason gave investigators one thing Rachel could not easily dismiss.
A password.
It unlocked a hidden cloud archive Rachel had used for years.
Inside were thousands of documents.
Forged emails.
Altered receipts.
Medical records.
Draft witness statements.
Peter’s fabricated messages.
And a folder labeled:
NATHAN.
Police opened it.
The folder was empty.
Deleted remotely seventeen minutes earlier.
Someone still had access.
Rachel was in court at the time.
Her devices had been seized.
Mason was in custody.
Claire looked at Peter.
“There’s another person.”
Someone had been helping Rachel all along.
