Chapter 14 - THE FAMILY RACHEL COULDN'T CONTROL
Allison confirmed it.
She had given Peter up for adoption when she was seventeen.
Decades later, she met Nathan through work without initially knowing Nathan was married to Peter’s sister.
By the time the truth emerged, their affair had already begun.
The family web was almost absurdly complicated.
Rachel discovered Peter’s biological connection to Allison during Nathan’s divorce investigation.
To Rachel, it confirmed a paranoid theory.
Everyone had chosen sides against her.
Her husband fathered a child with Peter’s biological mother.
Nathan then chose Peter to control the trust.
Rachel became convinced the entire family intended to steal her children’s inheritance.
Her resentment hardened into obsession.
Peter finally understood her.
He still would not excuse her.
Rachel was arrested on financial fraud, child endangerment and obstruction charges while Nathan’s death remained under investigation.
She said nothing during arrest.
She simply looked at Peter.
“You think you won?”
“No.”
“Good.”
From jail, Rachel activated the dead-man switch.
Documents flooded regulators, employers and attorneys.
But Margaret had helped investigators identify most of them beforehand.
Many were exaggerated.
Some were genuine.
Claire dealt with regulatory issues.
Elaine accepted consequences for falsified medical records.
Margaret faced charges for obstruction.
Rachel had expected fear to keep everyone silent.
Instead, confession weakened her power.
Then came the custody hearing.
Peter expected temporary guardianship.
Rachel’s attorneys shocked everyone.
They produced a notarized document Nathan had apparently signed seven months before his death.
It named Margaret, not Peter, as permanent guardian if both parents became unavailable.
Margaret was now facing criminal charges.
Rachel argued that if she lost custody, the children should enter a neutral foster placement rather than go to Peter.
Peter stared at the document.
Nathan’s signature appeared genuine.
Claire examined it.
The notary was legitimate.
The date matched.
Rachel might win one final delay.
Drew sat outside the courtroom with a counselor.
Peter joined him.
Drew looked small inside an oversized sweater.
“Are we going back?”
“I’m trying to make sure you don’t.”
Drew stared at his shoes.
“Daddy said Uncle Peter.”
Peter froze.
“When?”
“The day he left.”
“What did he say?”
Drew concentrated.
“Daddy was mad. He gave me a paper.”
“What paper?”
“I hid it.”
Peter crouched.
“Where?”
Drew whispered:
“Behind the basement wall.”
Peter remembered the unfinished paneling downstairs.
Police returned to Rachel’s house.
Behind a loose wooden panel near the mattress, they found a waterproof envelope.
Inside was Nathan’s handwritten guardianship declaration.
It explicitly revoked all previous nominations.
If anything happens to me, Peter Calder is the only person I trust to protect Drew and Lily from what is happening in this house.
Beneath the statement was another line.
Rachel knows I discovered what she and Mason did to my car.
The date was the morning Nathan died.
For the first time, Rachel had no earlier document prepared to explain it away.
But there was still one problem.
The letter alone could not prove Rachel ordered Nathan’s death.
