Chapter 4 - THE FOURTEEN MILLION DOLLAR CHILDREN

Peter showed Claire the trust.
She immediately understood the motive.
Rachel could use trust money only for expenses benefiting Drew and Lily.
School.
Medical care.
Housing.
Transportation.
Investment management.
She could not simply take fourteen million dollars.
But trustees controlled enormous discretion.
Claire pulled financial records.
Within six months of Nathan’s death, Rachel purchased a new SUV using money categorized as “child transportation.”
She renovated the house using “home accessibility improvements.”
She hired a private educational consultant for Drew.
The consultant charged $18,000 per month.
Peter searched the company.
Its address led to a mailbox store.
The registered owner was a man named Mason Reed.
Peter recognized the name.
Mason had dated Rachel in college.
Now the picture sharpened.
Rachel had been extracting trust money through inflated expenses.
If Peter became trustee, he would uncover it.
Drew’s call threatened everything.
But Rachel anticipated an audit too.
Her attorney voluntarily sent Claire hundreds of pages of receipts showing legitimate spending.
Private preschool.
Counseling.
Special meals.
Home repairs.
Health insurance.
The fraudulent transactions were buried among real ones.
“She knew someone would look,” Claire said.
Rachel was not stealing recklessly.
She had been building justification for every withdrawal.
The family rallied around her.
Margaret accused Peter of trying to seize Nathan’s money.
“You were always jealous of Rachel.”
“This isn’t about me.”
“You broke into her house!”
“The children were trapped downstairs.”
“Rachel said they were hiding during the storm.”
Peter stared at his mother.
“You believe that?”
Margaret looked away.
That hesitation mattered.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
“Nothing.”
“Mom.”
Margaret grabbed her purse.
“Leave your sister alone.”
She hurried out.
Peter followed but stopped when Claire called.
She had received the CPS medical report.
Drew’s injured leg had been examined.
The injury itself could have resulted from a fall.
But the doctor noticed something else.
Drew had signs of repeated nutritional deficiency.
Lily too.
They had been losing weight for months.
Rachel had records showing regular pediatric appointments.
Claire contacted the pediatrician.
The clinic had supposedly examined both children two weeks earlier.
Healthy weights.
Normal development.
No injuries.
Peter stared at the documents.
“How?”
Claire zoomed in on the electronic signature.
The physician was Dr. Elaine Foster.
Peter remembered her.
She had attended Nathan’s funeral.
And she had whispered something to Rachel that made Rachel suddenly leave the room.
Claire called the clinic.
Dr. Foster no longer worked there.
She had resigned four days after that appointment.
No forwarding address.
Then Peter received a text from an unknown number.
STOP LOOKING FOR ELAINE.
Another message followed.
