Chapter 13 - THE PERSON INSIDE THE FAMILY
Peter first suspected Thomas Kline.
Then Elaine Foster.
Then one of Rachel’s attorneys.
All wrong.
The access logs traced the deletion to Margaret’s home network.
Peter drove there with investigators.
Margaret sat at the kitchen table.
She did not resist.
She admitted knowing Rachel’s passwords.
But she denied deleting the Nathan folder.
“Who was here?”
“No one.”
Police checked the router.
A device had connected that morning.
Not Margaret’s phone.
Not her laptop.
The device name was simply:
RCalder-iPad.
Rachel’s old tablet.
Margaret claimed she had thrown it away months earlier.
Peter searched the house.
He found it hidden beneath linens in a bedroom closet.
Someone had planted it.
Rachel was attempting to frame Margaret.
That was Peter’s first assumption.
Then investigators recovered the deleted files locally.
Margaret had opened them previously.
Dozens of times.
Peter confronted her.
“You’ve been helping Rachel.”
Margaret cried.
“I was trying to protect everyone.”
Again, that word.
Protect.
Margaret admitted altering early records after Nathan’s death.
She helped Rachel hide the first trust withdrawals.
She contacted Dr. Foster.
She even gave Rachel old family messages that could be manipulated into evidence against Peter.
“But the basement?”
“No.”
“Nathan’s brakes?”
“No!”
Margaret seemed genuinely horrified.
Then why keep helping?
Because Rachel had threatened to reveal Peter’s adoption.
Margaret feared losing him.
Peter almost laughed from disbelief.
“You committed crimes because you were afraid I’d learn you adopted me?”
“I was afraid you’d think we lied your whole life.”
“You did.”
Margaret broke down.
Peter felt grief rather than anger.
Rachel had manipulated the entire family through shame.
Nathan’s affair.
Margaret’s secret.
Elaine’s prescriptions.
Mason’s crimes.
Peter’s temper.
Everyone had a weakness.
Rachel collected them like keys.
But Rachel made one mistake.
She believed Margaret would always protect her.
Margaret agreed to cooperate.
She gave police access to a second email account Rachel used.
In it was a scheduled message set to send automatically if Rachel failed to log in for seven days.
A dead-man switch.
The message contained documents exposing multiple people.
Insurance fraud.
Medical misconduct.
Tax irregularities.
Family secrets.
Rachel had built mutual destruction into her defense.
If arrested, everyone around her burned.
Claire read the list.
Then stopped.
Peter noticed her face.
“What?”
Claire turned the laptop.
One attachment was labeled:
PETER_CALDER_BIRTH_RECORDS.
Inside was the name of Peter’s biological mother.
Peter had never seen it before.
The woman’s name was Allison Grant.
The same Allison who had given birth to Nathan’s secret son, Caleb.
Peter stared at the screen.
Allison was not merely Nathan’s former mistress.
She was Peter’s biological mother.
