Chapter 1 - THE PHOTO ON THE FLOOR

Ethan Cole knew something was wrong before he opened the bedroom door.
The house was too quiet.
Rebecca’s car sat in the driveway even though she had texted him an hour earlier saying she was “still at the office.” A second car—a black Mercedes he recognized from corporate events—was parked half a block away beneath the sycamores.
Charles Whitmore’s car.
Rebecca’s boss.
Ethan stood at the bottom of the staircase for three full seconds, one hand on the banister, heart beating too hard.
Then he climbed.
At the top, he heard movement.
A hurried whisper.
A drawer closing.
Someone laughing nervously.
His entire body went cold.
He pushed the bedroom door open.
Rebecca and Charles jumped apart.
Rebecca wore a cream bathrobe over what looked like the black dress she had worn to work that morning. Charles’s shirt was untucked. His tie hung loose.
Ethan looked from his wife—
to her boss—
to the bed behind them.
Then everything inside him detonated.
“IN MY OWN BED?!”
Rebecca screamed.
“ETHAN—WAIT!”
He took one step into the room.
She rushed toward him, face white with panic.
“Ethan, please, let me explain!”
Her hand reached for his arm.
He knocked it away.
“DON’T TOUCH ME!”
Charles began backing toward the far side of the room.
That made Ethan even angrier.
“You stay right there.”
Charles lifted both hands.
“Ethan, this is not what you think.”
Ethan laughed once.
A broken, vicious sound.
“Then what exactly is it?”
Charles said nothing.
Rebecca started crying.
“Please, just calm down.”
“Don’t tell me to calm down in my own bedroom.”
Ethan’s eyes dropped to Charles’s phone sitting on the dresser.
An idea hit him.
Not smart.
Not calm.
But immediate.
He grabbed it.
Charles lunged.
“Give me that.”
Ethan stepped back.
The phone was unlocked.
He opened contacts.
Found one name.
CLAIRE.
Charles’s wife.
He hit call.
Charles’s face changed.
“No.”
Ethan lifted the phone to his ear.
“Too late.”
The call connected.
Ethan said through clenched teeth:
“Your husband is in my bedroom.”
Charles went completely pale.
For half a second there was silence.
Then a woman’s voice answered.
Not from the phone.
From just outside the room.
“I know.”
Everyone froze.
Ethan slowly turned.
The bedroom door opened wider.
Claire Whitmore stood there.
Dark coat.
No makeup.
Eyes dry.
Charles looked like a man seeing his executioner.
“Claire…”
She walked in.
“You can stop pretending now.”
Rebecca backed away.
Her breathing became ragged.
“Claire, I—”
“Don’t.”
Rebecca stepped back again.
Her heel caught the strap of her purse.
The bag fell.
Its contents spilled across the hardwood.
Lipstick.
Keys.
Receipts.
A folded envelope.
Several printed pages.
And one glossy black-and-white image.
It slid across the floor.
Stopped at Ethan’s shoe.
He looked down.
An ultrasound.
His body stopped moving.
He crouched.
Picked it up.
His hands began shaking.
The image was unmistakable.
A small shape.
A date.
Rebecca’s name.
Ethan looked at his wife.
Then at Charles.
His heartbreak turned into something darker.
“How dare you do this to me?!”
May you like
Rebecca burst into tears.
Charles went white.
