Chapter 3 - CLAIRE HAD BEEN FOLLOWING THE MONEY

Claire Whitmore had suspected the affair for three months.
She suspected the money first.
Charles ran Whitmore BioSystems, a private medical-device company that supplied hospital networks across the Midwest.
Claire owned forty-two percent through a family trust.
Charles controlled day-to-day operations.
Their marriage had been strained for years, but not openly broken.
Then Claire noticed unusual consulting payments.
Small at first.
Twenty thousand.
Thirty-five.
Fifty.
All routed to a vendor called R.C. Consulting.
The company had no website.
No employees.
No office beyond a mailbox.
Claire asked Charles once.
He said it belonged to a specialized regulatory adviser.
She believed him for two weeks.
Then she found the registration.
Rebecca Cole.
Ethan’s wife.
Claire hired forensic accountant Mara Chen.
Not a private detective.
Not yet.
Mara found $1.9 million in payments over eleven months.
Some had backup.
Most did not.
Claire still did not know whether the affair caused the payments or the payments caused the affair.
Then she saw hotel charges.
Then jewelry.
Then messages.
The bedroom was not the beginning.
It was the moment the lies finally collided in one room.
“I came here because Charles’s phone pinged this address,” Claire told Ethan.
“You track him?”
“I track company devices.”
Charles snapped:
“That’s illegal.”
Claire looked at him.
“No. It’s a company phone. Covered by the executive device policy you approved.”
Charles’s face tightened.
Claire turned back to Ethan.
“I didn’t expect to find them in your bedroom.”
Ethan looked at Rebecca.
“But you expected to find them together.”
May you like
“Yes.”
The answer was brutal because it was honest.
