Chapter 10 - THE RECORDING

The recording was from nine months earlier.

Victor’s voice.

Clear.

Caleb crying in the background.

Victor:

“Stop asking about Samuel.”

Catherine’s pen tapped twice.

Her signal for:

Why?

Victor:

“Because this whole thing ends when Mom says it ends.”

More crying.

Then:

“He’s better off thinking the kid is dead than finding out what we did.”

Silence filled the interview room.

Victor closed his eyes.

The recording did not prove the beginning.

It proved continuation.

He knew.

He participated.

He understood Samuel believed Caleb dead.

Then another recording.

Daria.

Catherine’s device placed openly on the table while she wrote questions.

Daria:

“You are paid to care for him, not investigate me.”

Catherine’s pen scratches.

Daria:

“No, Samuel cannot know.”

More writing.

Then:

“Because I will not sacrifice my son to repair a tragedy that cannot be undone.”

Which son?

Victor.

Always Victor.

Samuel listened once.

Then refused to hear it again.

The revenge he imagined for years after Caleb’s disappearance had no face.

Now it did.

He wanted Daria and Victor to feel the same loss.

Then he looked at Caleb asleep in the hospital family room.

And understood revenge could easily make the child carry another adult’s need.

He chose something else.

Truth.

Access removed.

Law.

Time.

Then DNA testing returned.

99.99% probability Samuel was the boy’s biological father.

The test did not create the truth.

It confirmed what the scars, memories, drawings, records, and timeline already showed.

Caleb was alive.

Samuel’s son had been alive the entire time.

Then the pediatric psychologist asked Samuel a harder question.

“Does Caleb know you are his father?”

Samuel said:

May you like

“He knows my name.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”
