Chapter 8 - THE MAN VICTOR MET

The debt collector story was only half true.

Victor did owe money.

But not because of a failed ordinary investment.

He had secretly used funds from a joint family renovation project without authorization to cover personal losses.

Again, not a giant embezzlement empire.

About $48,000.

Enough to ruin trust.

The collector was demanding repayment.

Victor met him privately because Samuel was scheduled to review the project accounts the following week.

If Samuel discovered the shortfall, Victor expected to be cut out of future family projects.

Daria knew.

She had been helping him quietly repay it.

That explained her panic.

If Caleb’s disappearance exposed why Victor drove into town, the financial misuse would surface too.

One lie protected two secrets.

Child negligence.

Money.

Samuel asked:

“You hid my son for forty-eight thousand dollars?”

Daria snapped:

“No.”

For the first time she spoke directly during questioning.

“I hid him because Victor would have gone to prison.”

Laura said:

“That was not certain.”

“He would have been destroyed.”

Samuel stared at her.

“And I wasn’t?”

Daria looked away.

There it was.

Her moral calculation.

Victor’s future was concrete.

Samuel’s grief was collateral.

Then Samuel learned something worse.

Daria’s favoritism toward Victor had a history.

Victor was her biological son.

Samuel was her stepson from his father’s first marriage.

Daria always insisted she loved them equally.

But Samuel’s father had trusted Samuel with most family business responsibilities.

Victor resented it.

Daria believed Samuel received:

the name,

the authority,

the respect.

Victor received scrutiny.

When the lake incident happened, Daria saw one final chance to prevent Victor from losing everything.

She chose him.

Again.

Then Laura asked:

“Did you ever intend to tell Samuel?”

Daria answered:

“Yes.”

“When?”

Silence.

Victor looked at his mother.

Even he seemed to realize there had never been a real date.
