Chapter 3 - THE LAKE STORY

Two years earlier, Victor had been responsible for Caleb for forty-seven minutes.

That number lived inside Samuel.

He had replayed it thousands of times.

The family was at the lake house.

Samuel was on a work call.

Daria was preparing lunch.

Victor offered to walk Caleb near the water.

Later Victor ran back shouting:

“I can’t find him.”

They found Caleb’s red jacket caught on reeds near the shoreline.

Search teams dragged the lake.

Divers searched.

Dogs followed scent toward the water and lost it.

No body.

Victor told police Caleb had run ahead.

He thought the boy went toward the dock.

Daria supported him.

Samuel blamed himself for taking the call.

Now the boy on the mansion steps said:

“He left me.”

Detective Laura Chen reopened the old file.

She began with facts, not Samuel’s hope.

“Children can repeat things adults tell them.”

Samuel nodded.

“Then prove or disprove it.”

The boy went to a pediatric hospital for examination and trauma assessment.

Catherine went too.

Daria and Victor were told not to contact either of them.

Catherine communicated through American Sign Language, writing, and a tablet.

An interpreter joined the interview.

Her real name was Catherine Bell.

Thirty-one.

Congenitally unable to speak after a severe childhood neurological illness, but fully hearing.

Not homeless by history.

Not a “crazy beggar.”

She had spent the previous six days moving between bus stations and shelters after fleeing a remote property with the child.

“Whose property?” Laura asked.

Catherine typed:

Kincaid family.

Samuel stared.

He owned several properties through family entities.

Which one?

Catherine wrote:

OLD HAWTHORNE FARM.

Samuel knew it.

A disused estate seventy miles away.

Daria managed it after Samuel’s father died.

Samuel had not visited in eight years.

Then Catherine opened a folder of photographs.

One showed the boy outside a stone guesthouse.

Metadata date:

eleven months after Caleb disappeared.

Another showed Daria entering the building.

Another:

Victor.

Samuel’s hands began shaking.

Victor had visited the hidden boy.
