Chapter 12 - VICTOR'S CHOICE
Victor Carter became the final family conflict.
He believed Daniel’s marriage weakened the family.
Not because Mallory was poor.
Because she demanded institutional separation.
Victor called it surrender.
Daniel called it survival.
Then the board discovered Victor had authorized two related-party security contracts through companies controlled by distant relatives.
Not illegal automatically.
Prices were above market.
No proven kickbacks.
But disclosure was incomplete.
Daniel had been planning to review them quietly.
Mallory said:
“Quietly again?”
He stopped.
Same habit.
Then Daniel sent the contracts to independent audit.
Victor exploded.
“You’re choosing her over blood.”
Daniel answered:
“No.”
Then:
“I’m choosing rules over family exceptions.”
Victor laughed.
“You think rules will protect you?”
Daniel said:
“They protect everyone from me too.”
That sentence ended the argument.
The audit recommended rebidding.
Victor resigned from two committee roles but kept his equity.
No dramatic exile.
No execution.
No mysterious disappearance.
Just reduced power.
For a man like Victor, that was harder.
Then he told Mallory privately:
“You changed him.”
She answered:
“He wanted to change before me.”
Victor looked almost disappointed.

That meant Mallory could not be blamed as the corrupting outsider.
Daniel’s evolution belonged to Daniel.
