Chapter 13 - VIVIAN RETURNS

Eighteen months later, Vivian returned to Aster No. 9.

Not as guest.

By appointment.

She had completed diversion.

Paid restitution.

Stayed away under a no-contact agreement that had now expired.

Mallory agreed to five minutes in a manager’s office.

Daniel did not attend.

Vivian looked less polished.

Still wealthy.

Still elegant.

But uncertain.

“I came to apologize.”

Mallory waited.

Vivian said:

“I thought being close to powerful people made me powerful.”

Mallory said nothing.

“I thought service meant lower.”

Still nothing.

Then:

“I hurt you because I thought you were beneath me.”

Better.

Not:

I was upset.

Not:

I misunderstood Daniel.

Then Vivian said:

“And when I found out you were his wife, I was horrified because suddenly I thought I’d attacked someone important.”

Mallory looked at her.

“That was the worst part.”

Vivian nodded.

“I know.”

Then:

“You were important before I knew.”

Mallory believed she understood the sentence.

That did not create friendship.

Mallory said:

“Thank you for saying it.”

Vivian stood.

“Do you forgive me?”

“No.”

Vivian inhaled.

May you like

Then nodded.

For the first time, she accepted an answer she did not like without trying to change the hierarchy.
