Chapter 5 - THE ALLIANCE THAT NEVER EXISTED
Victor admitted the truth two days later.
He never promised Daniel to Vivian.
Never promised a wedding.
Never asked Daniel to date her.
He did something more subtle.
He failed to correct Harold.
At dinners, Harold said:
“Once the kids figure themselves out.”
Victor smiled.
At a golf meeting:
“Imagine Thanksgiving if these families joined.”
Victor answered:
“Could be worse.”
At a charity gala, Vivian asked directly:
“Does Daniel ever talk about me?”
Victor said:
“Daniel doesn’t talk about personal matters.”
True.
But useless.
Then Victor occasionally seated them together.
Invited Vivian to Carter events.
Allowed gossip to grow.
Why?
Sloan Capital became more flexible.
Not dramatically.
But relationships warmed.
Commitment letters moved faster.
Harold felt socially invested.
Victor believed it was harmless because Daniel never reciprocated.
Mallory stared.
“You rented out his availability.”
Victor’s face hardened.
“I kept options open.”
“I’m not an option.”
“You were hidden.”
Daniel stood.
“That was our decision.”
Victor snapped:
“And your decision cost leverage.”
Daniel went silent.
That sentence exposed the family philosophy.
Privacy had economic value.
Marriage had economic cost.
Mallory said:
“So you preferred everyone believing Daniel might marry Vivian.”
Victor answered:
“I preferred not correcting assumptions until the deal closed.”
Harold Sloan later admitted he understood nothing had been promised.
But he believed:
“Families like ours don’t leave that kind of ambiguity unless there is potential.”
Mallory hated the sentence.
Families like ours.
As if wealth rewrote consent into market signaling.
Then Vivian’s attorney made a similar defense in another context.
Vivian believed Mallory was harassing her and provoking her intentionally.
Witnesses contradicted that.
The assault case moved forward.
No felony spectacle.
But no disappearing into private settlement either.
