Chapter 3 - DANIEL HAD BEEN WAITING FOR THIS NIGHT

Back inside their house, Daniel finally told Emma why he had grabbed her wrist before she answered.

Ryan had been in trouble for months.

Not ordinary trouble.

Not debt.

Not drinking.

Daniel had discovered that Ryan was using their mother’s home address to receive mail tied to a private lending company called Keller Bridge Capital.

There was no family company by that name.

Ryan created it.

He borrowed money from three local investors, telling them he had authority to pledge future distributions from the Keller Family Trust.

He did not.

Daniel found out when one investor called him by mistake.

“I confronted him last week,” Daniel said.

Emma stared.

“You didn’t tell me?”

“I thought I could fix it before Mom knew.”

“That sentence is exactly how families end up in crimes.”

Daniel looked away.

She was right.

Ryan had begged for time.

Said he could repay everything after closing a property deal.

Daniel did not believe him.

Then two nights earlier, Ryan texted:

If anything happens, remember you’re the one who pushed me.

Daniel had saved it.

That was why twenty-one calls at two in the morning did not sound like an emergency to him.

They sounded like a trap arriving on schedule.
