Chapter 5 - THE CAMERA AT THE NORTH GATE

Ryan surrendered through an attorney thirty-six hours later.

His story was simple.

He had been drinking.

Emma drove because she was sober.

After the collision, she panicked and left.

Ryan moved the car home to “protect the family.”

Emma laughed when Mara read the statement.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was insulting.

“I was asleep beside Daniel.”

Daniel nodded.

“All night until the calls.”

Their home security system confirmed motion inside the house.

Emma entered the kitchen at 10:42 p.m.

Daniel locked the back door at 11:06.

Neither exterior door opened until 2:11 a.m.

Ryan’s lawyer attacked the system.

Maybe timestamps were wrong.

Maybe someone used another exit.

Maybe Emma walked.

Then the north gate camera was recovered.

The Keller estate used a private license-plate camera maintained by a landscaping company, not the family security network.

At 1:43 a.m., Ryan’s black sedan entered the private road.

Driver visible.

Ryan.

Passenger visible.

A woman.

Not Emma.

Mara paused the image.

Emma leaned closer.

Daniel whispered:

“No.”

The woman was their mother.

Margaret Keller.

Sixty-three.

In the passenger seat.

Alive.

May you like

Awake.

And looking terrified.
