Chapter 4 - THE MAN RYAN HIT KNEW TOO MUCH

The injured man survived surgery.
His name was Owen Mercer.
Forty-six.
Accountant.
And, until six months earlier, bookkeeper for the Keller Family Trust.
Emma had met him twice.
Quiet man.
Wire-rim glasses.
Always carried paper folders even when everyone else used tablets.
Mara came to the house the next afternoon.
“Owen was not walking randomly near the gate.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why was he there?”
“He had arranged to meet your mother.”
Emma’s stomach tightened.
“At two in the morning?”
“Apparently he believed the matter was urgent.”
Mara placed a photocopy on the table.
An email Owen sent at 11:18 p.m.
Mrs. Keller, I found the transfers. Ryan is not the only name involved. Do not sign anything until we speak.
Emma looked at Daniel.
“Not the only name?”
Mara nodded.
“Your mother was scheduled to sign revised trust documents this morning.”
Daniel stood.
“Who prepared them?”
“An attorney named Victor Sloan.”
Daniel swore under his breath.
Emma knew the name.
Victor was Ryan’s closest friend.
And the lawyer who had handled the refinancing of the family mansion.
The crash was no longer just panic after reckless driving.

Owen was bringing evidence to the one person who could stop a trust change.
Then Ryan’s car hit him before he reached the house.
