Chapter 6 - TWELVE MILLION DOLLARS

Claire’s inherited stake was not worth twelve million in cash today.

That distinction mattered.

The figure represented projected value after redevelopment, debt reduction, and refinancing.

Current fair range:

between $6.5 million and $8.2 million.

Still enormous.

Daniel had once told Claire her mother’s old shares were “paperwork.”

Gloria called them historical.

Vanessa joked.

All three knew enough to know that was false.

Then Claire found out why the family needed the restructuring.

Harold Bennett—Daniel’s late grandfather—had created an ownership structure that split:

operating business,

real estate,

and family voting rights.

BHG Properties East held some of the most valuable land but carried minority rights that could block sales.

Claire’s inherited twenty-six percent was one of those rights.

By rolling the entity into Bennett Heritage Real Estate Trust, the family could centralize control and refinance.

Claire would receive units in the new trust.

Not necessarily lose value.

But she would lose veto power.

That was the real theft.

Not money disappearing.

Power.

Daniel expected Claire to accept economics while surrendering control.

He never asked.

Then Maya found the most damaging internal note.

GLORIA:

Claire cannot be allowed to hold a blocking position.

DANIEL:

She doesn't even know she has it.

VANESSA:

Rachel says we can roll it administratively.

GLORIA:

Then do it before she learns enough to become difficult.

Claire stared.

Vanessa knew.

Not the forgery details.

But the purpose.

She had helped hide Claire’s control rights.

Then Claire asked Vanessa to meet.

Vanessa came angry.

Not apologetic.

“Rachel lied to me.”

Claire said:

“You lied to me.”

Vanessa stopped.

Different betrayal.

Then Claire placed Gloria’s email on the table.

Vanessa looked away.

“I thought you’d still own the value.”

“Did you think I should get to choose?”

Silence.

“No.”

At least honest.

Then Vanessa said:

“I thought family control mattered more.”

Claire smiled coldly.

May you like

“I’m family when you need my shares and staff when you need dinner.”

Vanessa had no answer.
