Chapter 7 - THE FLASH DRIVE
The silver drive came from a former Bennett Heritage IT contractor named Owen Park.
He had mirrored a restructuring data room before a system migration.
Rachel later requested deletion of several folders.
Owen complied operationally.
But his retained backup survived under contract.
Claire found him through a metadata trail Maya’s forensic consultant traced.
The drive contained:
draft consents,
valuation models,
board emails,
legal notes,
hotel reimbursement records,
and one audio file accidentally synced from Rachel’s phone.
Claire listened with Maya.
Rachel:
“She’s going to find out.”
Daniel:
“Not before closing.”
Rachel:
“You keep saying that.”
Daniel:
“Claire trusts me.”
Silence.
Then Rachel:
“And Vanessa?”
Daniel laughed.
“My sister sees what Mom tells her to see.”
Claire froze.
Then another recording.
Rachel:
“If Claire sues, I’m exposed.”
Daniel:
“She won't.”
Rachel:
“You're sleeping next to a woman whose money you just moved without asking.”
Daniel:
“Exactly. I know her.”
Claire stopped the audio.
That sentence hurt more than the affair.
Daniel believed intimacy meant predictability.
He knew her kindness.
Her patience.
Her tendency to forgive.
Then used those qualities as risk assumptions.
Maya said:
“We preserve this.”
Claire nodded.
Then noticed another folder.
HOTEL.
Inside:
reimbursement submissions from Rachel.
Some rooms matched the affair.
Bennett Heritage had paid for them as legal travel expenses.
Daniel and Rachel had used company money to finance at least part of their affair.
Now Vanessa had a reason to turn.
