Chapter 10 - THE MOTHER WHO HELPED SCOTT WITHOUT KNOWING IT
Claire Bennett had one more secret.
Scott borrowed from her.
$75,000.
Eight months earlier.
She did not tell Evelyn.
Why?
Scott said he was funding a surprise investment for their future.
He made Claire promise not to ruin it.
Claire gave the money.
Evelyn stared.
“Why?”
“He said you were stressed.”
“So?”
“He said he wanted to fix things.”
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
Everyone loved the idea of Scott fixing things without telling her.
Claire continued:
“He said if I asked you, you’d panic.”
There it was again.
People treated Evelyn’s caution as a problem to route around.
Then Scott stopped repaying.
Claire realized something was wrong.
She confronted him.
He said a property closing was delayed.
Then asked about Grayhaven.
That was why Claire signed the exploration letter.
She thought helping Scott succeed might repair the marriage.
Evelyn felt anger.
“You helped him use family assets because you wanted my marriage saved.”
Claire cried.
“Yes.”
“Without asking if I wanted it saved.”
Silence.
That was the deeper violation.
Then Claire revealed Samuel’s old fear.
Before dying, he told her:
“Scott wants scale too quickly.”
He liked Scott.
Did not hate him.
But he warned Claire not to lend against family land.
Claire ignored part of that.
She wanted peace.
Then Daniel found Samuel’s final trust memorandum.
It said:
Evelyn will be tempted to let stronger personalities define practicality for her. Do not confuse her caution with weakness.
Evelyn almost laughed.
Her father had been annoyingly accurate.
Then Claire asked:
“Do you forgive me?”
Evelyn said:
“Not yet.”
Claire nodded.
Progress.
Then the criminal case moved.
Authorities had strong evidence of:
forged power of attorney,
false court document,
misrepresentation in property transactions.
Scott’s cooperation could reduce exposure.
He accepted responsibility.
Not immediately noble.
Strategic.
Still.
He entered a plea negotiation.
Vanessa’s evidence helped.
Claire’s loan evidence helped.
Daniel’s document trail helped.
Scott’s own emails hurt most.
Then one email:
IF EVELYN SEES THE ACTUAL NUMBERS SHE'LL SHUT EVERYTHING DOWN.
Another:
BETTER TO CLOSE FIRST AND EXPLAIN AFTER.
That sentence became the entire case.
