Chapter 7 - THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR ACCOUNT

The Bennett Legacy Fund was created by Evelyn’s grandfather.

Not liquid inheritance.

A diversified trust intended for:

Claire’s support,

Evelyn’s education,

family medical needs,

and eventual distribution at Evelyn’s thirtieth birthday.

Current value:

approximately $6.8 million.

Scott found a statement eighteen months earlier.

He never told Evelyn.

Instead, he asked Daniel Price’s office casual questions about:

spousal rights,

beneficiary distributions,

trust loans.

Daniel’s assistant answered generally without realizing motive.

Scott learned:

he could not access it directly.

So he changed approach.

He began increasing marital debt.

If Evelyn received the trust at thirty while still married, some distributions might remain separate, but marital financial pressure could encourage her to use it.

Scott had five years.

Too slow.

Then he found the house.

Then the island.

Immediate assets.

Evelyn felt nauseated.

“He married me for money?”

Daniel said:

“Careful.”

Scott and Evelyn met before Samuel died.

Before Scott knew the trust values.

Their early relationship may have been genuine.

Then wealth entered.

People could change after love.

That was harder than a clean con.

Then Scott’s old emails showed the shift.

To a friend:

EVELYN'S FAMILY ACTS BROKE BUT THEY'RE SITTING ON LAND EVERYWHERE.

Another:

IF SHE'D STOP THINKING LIKE HER MOM WE COULD BE SET.

Not marriage fraud.

Entitlement.

Then one message hurt more.

SHE DOESN'T EVEN DESERVE THE ISLAND. SHE NEVER GOES.

Evelyn stared.

Absence again interpreted as surrender.

Then Scott’s attorney requested settlement.

He would:

consent to rescission of house sale,

cooperate with recovery,

assign commissions,

release any claim to Grayhaven or Bennett trust assets,

accept divorce.

In exchange:

Northstar and Evelyn would not pursue punitive civil claims beyond restitution,

and Evelyn would take no position on criminal charging.

Daniel said:

“Not terrible.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Would he admit forgery?”

“In writing.”

That mattered.

Then Rebecca warned:

“Criminal authorities decide independently.”

Good.

No private immunity.

Evelyn considered.

Then Marcus Vale complicated things.

The private lender claimed Scott had pledged “future marital inheritance proceeds.”

Legally weak.

But the contract named Evelyn.

She had not signed.

Again.

Scott had represented her expected trust as part of his personal net worth.

Marcus could not reach the trust.

But he could sue Scott for misrepresentation.

Everyone wanted pieces of a man with no money.

Then Claire said:

“I should have told you about the Legacy Fund.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Yes.”

“I thought money would complicate your marriage.”

“It did anyway.”

Claire cried.

Samuel had instructed her to educate Evelyn gradually.

Claire delayed.

Why?

Fear Evelyn would tell Scott.

Then Scott found out first.

Silence again creating asymmetric power.

Evelyn said:

“No more hidden assets.”

Claire nodded.

May you like

“All of it.”

Good.
