Chapter 9 - THE HOUSE BUYER WHO WANTED TO KEEP THE DEAL

The Hawthorne Drive buyer was not Scott’s friend.

It was a couple.

Mark and Elise Turner.

They had sold their previous home.

Packed.

Scheduled movers.

Enrolled a child in a nearby school.

They believed the sale was valid.

Evelyn felt sick.

Her problem had created innocent people.

The Turners did not want drama.

They wanted the house.

Legally, rescission was likely because Evelyn’s consent was forged.

But forcing them out of a transaction would cost them money and months.

Rebecca asked:

“What do you want?”

Evelyn thought.

She no longer wanted the house.

Not after emptiness.

Not after Scott turned it into currency.

So she proposed:

validate a new sale,

but at independently appraised fair market value,

with proper signatures,

escrow adjusted for restitution,

and delayed closing until title cleared.

The Turners agreed.

Scott’s original sale price had been low:

$1.25 million.

Appraisal:

$1.38 million.

The Turners agreed to $1.34 million because of inconvenience and market movement.

Evelyn signed.

Her real signature.

Choice.

Then furniture recovery.

Some sold to consignment dealers.

Some stored.

Some lost.

The dining table returned.

Photographs returned.

Her father’s print returned.

The sofa did not.

Evelyn did not care.

Then Vanessa returned one object personally.

A small wooden jewelry box.

Samuel made it for Evelyn when she was twelve.

Vanessa had found it in a “trash” pile and kept it aside.

She handed it over.

“I’m sorry.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“For this?”

“For wanting your life to be empty so mine could start.”

That was the real apology.

Evelyn nodded.

“I believe you.”

Not forgiveness.

Enough.

Then Vanessa said:

“I’m not marrying him.”

Evelyn almost smiled.

“I assumed.”

“I’m suing him for the deposits I personally paid.”

“Good.”

Vanessa looked surprised.

Evelyn continued:

“You should.”

Consequences did not require alliance.

Then Scott learned Evelyn had completed a valid sale of the house.

He called furious.

“That equity is marital.”

“Yes.”

“You can’t just control it.”

“It’s in escrow.”

He stopped.

Daniel had structured it properly.

No revenge transfer.

No secret taking.

Scott sounded almost disappointed.

Evelyn said:

May you like

“This is what it looks like when paperwork is real.”

Then hung up.
