Chapter 3 - THE SIGNATURE FROM THE AIR
Flight records showed Claire’s plane took off at 2:14 p.m.
The consent form was signed at 2:32.
Wi-Fi unavailable until 3:01.
Ryan’s lawyer said Claire could have preauthorized the signature.
Claire had not.
Then he produced an old financial authorization.
Three years earlier, Claire gave Ryan permission to execute routine household refinancing documents on her behalf.
Broad language.
Not unlimited.
Naomi read it.
“This is bad.”
Claire frowned.
“For him?”
“For certainty.”
The authorization could arguably cover some transactions.
Not a pledge of separate-property rights.
But the Bennetts would fight that distinction.
Then Ryan gave his version.
“Claire knew the company needed liquidity.”
True.
“She knew we were exploring refinancing.”
True.
“She told me to handle it.”
True.
“Now she’s rewriting history because she wants to leave.”
Half true.
Claire had not objected to refinancing generally.
She objected to using her inherited rights as collateral without disclosure.
Then Diane filed an affidavit.
She described Claire’s behavior for six months.
Insomnia.
Mood swings.
Angry outbursts.
Medication.
Leaving the house overnight.
Claire stared.
“How does she know all this?”
Naomi looked at the affidavit.
“Because she wrote it down.”
A notebook existed.
Diane produced copies.
Dates.
Times.
Quotes.
Claire:
I hate this family.
Claire:
I wish I had never married Ryan.
Claire throwing a glass into the sink.
Claire sleeping at her friend’s apartment.
Real events.
Selective.
Then one entry:
Claire discussing gun permit renewal.
Months before the suitcase incident.
Naomi’s face changed.
“She was documenting the firearm.”
Claire whispered:
“Why?”
Then discovery produced an email from Ryan to Diane.
Document instability in case we need authority.
Date:
Six weeks before the bedroom confrontation.
Claire stared.
Ryan’s lawyer immediately explained it.
Business continuity.
Ryan worried Claire’s stress might affect household finances.
But the phrase “need authority” sat there like a blade.
Then Naomi found the attachment.
A draft emergency marital management petition.
No firearm mentioned.
No suitcase.
