Chapter 7 - THE CHECK DIANE CREATED
Diane claimed the check was routine.
Lane Capital had accumulated cash.
As beneficial owner, Claire was entitled to distribution.
Then why issue it the day before searching the suitcase?
Diane had no clean answer.
Naomi found the transfer request.
Reason:
Beneficiary liquidity.
Requested by:
Ryan Bennett.
Claire stared.
Ryan said:
“I wanted you to have cash if you left.”
That almost sounded kind.
Then the next page.
If beneficiary accepts distribution, Lane Capital equity interest may be treated as partially redeemed.
Naomi went still.
The $75,000 check was not simply cash.
It could be used to argue Claire had accepted a buyout of part of Lane Capital’s twenty-percent stake.
Diane said:
“Only partially.”
“Without telling her?”
“The paperwork was attached.”
It was not.
Then Claire understood why the check had been placed in the suitcase.
Someone wanted it to leave the house with her.
If she deposited it, they could claim she accepted redemption.
If police found it during the “stolen property” dispute, they could call it evidence she was secretly taking family funds.
Either result helped.
Claire looked at Ryan.
“Did you know?”
He hesitated.
“Yes.”
That hurt more than denial would have.
He continued:
“I thought it would give you an exit.”
“An exit from what?”
“The company.”
“My own equity?”
He looked down.
“There was too much conflict.”
Claire laughed.
“So you tried to buy me out without asking.”
“Partially.”
She almost smiled at the absurdity.
Then Naomi uncovered the proposed Lane Capital valuation.
Twenty-percent stake valued at:
$310,000.
Original investment:
$380,000.
Current underlying property appreciation suggested fair value closer to $1.2 million.
They were trying to redeem Claire cheaply.
Why now?
Because Lane Capital’s anti-pledge rights blocked the $4.6 million refinancing.
If Claire’s stake were redeemed, the restriction weakened.
Then Ryan’s business attorney sent a message by mistake to Naomi’s office.
One sentence:
Need Lane cleaned before Friday close.
