Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN DIANE CALLED UNSTABLE

Claire wanted to destroy Diane publicly.

Naomi stopped her.

“You win with documents.”

“I have documents.”

“Then stop giving them emotions to use.”

Fair.

Claire moved into a furnished apartment.

No firearm.

No direct contact.

All communication through counsel.

Ryan hated it.

He sent apologies.

Then anger.

Then nostalgia.

Claire answered none.

Then Diane gave a private interview to a family-business mediator.

She described Claire as emotionally volatile and obsessed with inheritance.

The mediator asked why.

Diane produced old messages.

Claire:

I hate being treated like an outsider.

Claire:

This house feels like yours even though my money is everywhere.

Claire:

One day I’m going to make all of you account for every dollar.

Real.

Diane used them to argue Claire’s financial claims were revenge.

Then Naomi asked for Diane’s own messages.

They found one to Ryan:

If she starts asking where Lane money went, shift conversation to marriage instability.

Another:

Do not argue numbers with her. Document behavior.

Another:

If she leaves angry, even better.

Claire read them in silence.

Diane had been trying to convert financial questions into psychological evidence.

Then Ryan said in deposition:

“I did not approve every message my mother sent.”

True.

Naomi asked:

“Did you ever tell Claire your mother was documenting her?”

“No.”

“Did you ever tell Diane to stop?”

“Once.”

“Show us.”

No message.

No email.

No proof.

Then the lender postponed closing.

Bennett Development Group faced payroll risk.

Ryan asked Claire to approve a temporary smaller loan.

This time directly.

No tricks.

Claire asked:

“Collateral?”

“Company receivables.”

“No house?”

“No.”

“No Lane Capital?”

“No.”

“Independent review?”

“Yes.”

For the first time, he was asking.

Claire authorized the review.

The company might still deserve saving.

The marriage did not.

Then the review found something bigger.

Bennett Property Holdings had one commercial property valued at $2.1 million.

Title chain showed Lane Capital had funded thirty-five percent of the original purchase.

But Lane Capital’s ownership records showed only twenty percent.

Where did the missing fifteen percent go?

A handwritten adjustment:

Transferred to Diane Bennett pursuant to private family agreement.

Claire stared.

Margaret’s investment had been diluted years before.

Without her signature.
